Ihor Skrypnyk

Ihor Skrypnyk (1971–2021) was a Ukrainian intellectual, military journalist, publicist, and writer. He was born in 1971 in the city now known as Dnipro, into the family of a military doctor. In 1993, he graduated from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv with a degree in Romance and Germanic philology. He served in the diplomatic service, worked as a foreign language teacher and journalist. While reporting on the Kyiv-2 battalion during the fighting on the Bakhmut highway, he suffered a concussion. This book is about his experience of witnessing the establishment of Ukrainian independence at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. With his characteristic figurative hermeticism, the author reflects on the price of freedom, the complex psychological aspects of his own political arrest, and the bloodshed of the Ukrainian-Russian war. The book includes his literary and metaphysical reflections on national freedom and on the average Ukrainian, who is often forced to confront not only external enemies but also internal ones.
