Inazō Nitobe

Inazō Nitobe (1862–1933) was a Japanese agronomist, diplomat, politician, and writer. Born into a samurai family, he converted to Christianity at an early age and was educated at the Sapporo Agricultural College, the Imperial University of Tokyo, the Johns Hopkins University and the University of Halle. He taught courses in agricultural economics and colonial studies at the Sapporo College, the University of Kyoto, and the University of Tokyo. He participated in the professor exchange program of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He supported the policy of Westernisation in Japan and the colonisation of Korea. In the 1920s, he worked in the administration of the League of Nations and in the Imperial Parliament of Japan. As a writer, he became known primarily for his bestseller Bushido: The Soul of Japan, published in 1900, but his complete works amounted to 25 volumes.
