Panteleimon Kulish

Panteleimon Kulish

Panteleimon Kulish (1819‒1897) is one of the most prominent Ukrainian cultural figures, who, despite his significance, is not easily accepted into the world of contemporary intellectual thought. This is due to the very attitude of this writer and thinker, who often shocked his contemporaries with his sharp statements and paradoxical conclusions that did not fit into the generally accepted boundaries of his time. Nevertheless, his contribution to culture, namely to the development of poetry, prose, ethnography, publishing, and the formation of the Ukrainian language, is enormous and quite comparable to the work of Taras Shevchenko. And he was forced to do all this under conditions of brutal government censorship. His ideological repertoire can be attributed to the European Romantic tradition, and his outlook on life can be described as characteristic of the Enlightenment. At the same time, he was a skilled translator of the works by William Shakespeare and George Byron, as well as the co-author of the first complete Ukrainian translation of the Bible.
