Gaius Julius Caesar

Gaius Julius Caesar

Gaius Julius Caesar (100–44 BC) was an ancient Roman statesman and talented military leader. He came from a long-lived, but impoverished aristocratic family, and held the positions of supreme pontiff, consul, and dictator. He expanded the territories controlled by Rome by annexing large areas of Western Europe during the Gallic War. At the same time, he is considered one of the most famous ancient Roman writers, whose texts have been studied in educational institutions for centuries as examples of ‘golden Latin’. Only his Commentaries, partially completed by his supporters, have survived to this day, describing his military and political campaigns.
