Merja Mäki
Merja Mäki (born 1983) is a contemporary Finnish writer. She comes from a Karelian family that had to evacuate inland due to Russian aggression. Her debut novel Before the Birds is an echo of her family’s legend during the Winter War and the subsequent dramatic years of Finnish history. In 2022, the novel was awarded the Finnish literary prize Tulenkantaja. He currently lives in the town of Kauhava in the Southern Ostrobothnia region, where he teaches Finnish language and literature at a secondary school. In 2023, Gummerus published her second novel, also based on events from the Second World War.
