This book contains the most typical and the brightest samples of Latvian dainu. To date, over one million such songs have been recorded in Latvia and elsewhere, and mostly these are short four-line blank verses. But here Ukrainian readers have an opportunity to get acquainted with the optimal quantity of the songs and to create their own objective impression of Latvian folk-song heritage. These poetical miniatures become available to Ukrainian readers for the first time.

Latvian Folklore by Yurko Sadlovskyi

Julia Pochynok

November 2013

In his folk songbook, Yuri Sadlovsky presents Latvian dainas, which are among the oldest in Latvian song folklore. Daina has a stable, almost geometric structure. Its shape resembles the usual quatrain. The collection is divided into separate thematic sections: the main mythical deities, man, labor, observation of human life, youth, engagement, life of spouses, end of life, obscenedainas. Each particular song can be perceived as an individual poetic miniature which constructs the whole mosaic of the entire collection.
