Marshal Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim (1867–1951) successfully ruled the armed forces and the country during the struggle for independence, the state formation, and during the years of global military and political conflicts that threatened the very foundations of Finland’s existence. This is the man who has made the most significant contribution to the country’s sovereignty.
The first volume of his memoirs tells about the beginnings of Baron Mannerheim’s career, his participation in the Russo-Japanese War and World War I, his exploratory journey through Asia, the revolution in Russia and the Finnish War of Independence, the author’s contribution to the formation of domestic and foreign policy of independent Finland, as well as his hunting travels.
The second volume of his memoirs tells about difficult vicissitudes of the formation and financing of the Finnish Defence Forces, the fierce opposition to a much more powerful eastern enemy during the Winter War (1939–1940) and the Continuation War (1941–1944), and challenges of postwar political development of the country.
