J. R. R. Tolkien’s works in Ukrainian

The Astrolabe Publishing set a goal to publish all John Ronald Reuel Tolkien’s works in Ukrainian.

We began to work on this project from the date of establishment of the publishing house. We admire J. R. R. Tolkien (1892–1973) for his ability to connect deep knowledge of scientist with penetrating intuition and refined mastery of artist. To our opinion, that exactly caused "the exact fantasy" (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe) so strongly marked in works by this great author. Whatever supporters of "strict science" say, weakened by their own self-limitation, Tolkien succeeds to understand better events of ancient history, world-view and characters of people of the past, features of historical geography as well as to recreate the structure of European mythology, more precisely than most modern historians, geographers, philologists and anthropologists. For him "the tree of life always flourishes", his style enraptures and haunts us to the last page of a book, his wisdom teaches unobtrusively. It is necessary to be only able to see it all, with the proper patience and gratitude, and everybody will be rewarded.

During all this time the basic fictional works by J. R. R. Tolkien was already published: The Lord of the Rings ― published in 2004–2005 (paperback, in 3 books, designed by the publishing house), 2006 (hardback, in 1 book, designed by the publishing house), 2013 (hardback, in 3 books, designed by Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.), The Hobbit ― published in 2007 (hardback, designed by the publishing house), 2011 and 2013 (hardback, Alan Lee’s illustrations), 2012 and 2014 (hardback, designed by Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.), The Silmarillion (edited by Christopher Tolkien) ― published in 2008 (hardback, designed by the publishing house), 2014 (hardback, a picture by Ted Nasmith is taken as a basis of the cover design), The Children of Húrin (edited by Christopher Tolkien) ― published in 2006 (hardback, Alan Lee’s illustrations) and 2014 (hardback, Alan Lee’s illustrations, enlarged format), the collection of short stories and lyrics named Tales from the Perilous Realm including Roverandom, Farmer Giles of Ham, The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, Smith of Wootton Major, Leaf by Nigle and the author’s essay On Fairy-Stories (hardback, Alan Lee’s illustrations, published in 2009), The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún (edited by Christopher Tolkien, hardback, a photo by Bill Sanderson is taken as a basis of the design, published in 2010).

Kateryna Onishchuk (Kateryna Mikhalitsyna), Olena O’Lear (Olena Brosalina), Olena Feshovets were involved in the project as translators. Halyna Hinaylo, Yurii Krukevych, Volodymyr Stasenko worked on book design. Nazar Fedorak provided literary editing. Leonid Rudnytsky and Oleh Feschowetz worked as consultants.

Today The Fall of Arthur (edited by Christopher Tolkien, planned for September 2015) and the illustrated version of The Silmarillion (with Ted Nasmith’s illustrations) are being prepared for publication; we are in treaty with the rightsholders for publication of the full-length version of The History of Middle-earth. Our plans include an illustrated version of The Lord of the Rings as well as editions of The Silmarillion, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings designed by Ukrainian illustrators.
