The only novel by the German poet Friedrich von Schiller. Formally, it is, and quite in a romantic style, a “fragment”, but still a completed work. This is a “sensation novel”, which deals with the themes of spiritualism and conspiracy. The suspense develops around a secret society that seeks to gain influence over an heir to the throne and thus determine the politics and life in Europe at the time. This is also a Gothic romance with elements of drama, and an epistolary work, and a philosophical treatise, and an adventurous novel. Despite the fact that the events described here take place in the late 18th century, this work is still relevant both in style and content — created as if in the early 21st century — and tells about the foundations of today’s Europe.
