The first Ukrainian translation of George Orwell’s allegorical fairy story Animal Farm was published in 1947 and was intended for Ukrainian refugees living in displaced persons camps. The translation was done by Ihor Shevchenko under the pen name Ivan Cherniatynskyi. This edition brings back that earlier translation to readers as a significant achievement of Ukrainian culture. In addition to the author’s preface and the translation itself, the book includes an afterword revealing the relationship between the author and the translator, a detailed chronology of the translation’s creation, newspaper advertisements and reviews as well as correspondence related to this translation.
