The book, which recounts the history of two families — the Krushelnytskyis and the Levytskyis — bears witness to the tragic fate of the Galician intelligentsia in the 20th century. Moreover, it is imbued with optimism and faith in the potential and intellectual and moral strength of the human spirit. The book also features literary portraits of contemporaries, as well as essays and articles written on important social events and topics, published at various times and in various editions. Its author, Prof. Larysa Krushelnytska (1928–2017), a descendant of these families, was a scientist, an archaeologist renowned both in Ukraine and abroad. Between 1991 and 2003, she headed the Vasyl Stefanyk Scientific Library of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Lviv and remained its honorary director for many years afterwards. During this time, the library developed into a major scientific and cultural centre. A member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society, she has led numerous expeditions and organised and participated in many academic conferences. Larysa Krushelnytska is also known as an outstanding publicist. The book, now in its fifth edition, has received favourable reviews from Yevhen Sverstiuk, Lina Kostenko, Mykhailyna Kotsyubynska, Andrii Sodomora, Arkadii Zhukovskyi and Myroslav Marynovych; and its author has been awarded two international prizes (2002, 2004).
