Heart of Darkness (176 pages)
The novel Heart of Darkness (1902) by worldwide famous Ukrainian-born English writer of Polish descent Joseph Konrad (1857–1924) gains a deepest insight into human nature and, maybe for this very reason, is regarded as one of the most renowned works of fiction of the 20th century. Its key topic as well as of other the writer’s works is an endless journey of a western man about the world’s margins. A homeless, rootless seaman Marlow is hired as a skipper of a river steamship in the Belgian trading company with the sole aim: to find in remote parts of Congo the most successful its agent — a supplier of ivory Kurtz which, for reasons unknown to Marlow, became for the company very «uncomfortable». But an ordinary for colonial times trip grows into a terrible journey into the heart of darkness… The plot of this novel, though already enriched with the circumstances of the war in Vietnam, provided the basis for Francis Coppola’s cinematographic drama Apocalypse Now (1979).

Falk. Amy Foster. Tomorrow (224 pages)
A collection of three shorter works by the famous British writer of Ukrainian extraction. Conrad’s experience of exile from Ukraine manifests itself in the themes of isolation and migration found in Amy Foster (1901) and Tomorrow (1902). This circle of themes is still live for Ukrainian readers as Ukrainian nation passed through several “waves” of the mass exodus in the late 19th – early 21st centuries. The Amy Foster tells the story of an emigrated Galician adjusting to his new life in England, and Tomorrow tells of the homecoming of an aging sailor’s longlost son. In the meanwhile Falk (1901) contrasts, as Conrad once put it, “common sentimentalism with the frank standpoint of a more or less primitive man”, a man with a conscience, however, about the girl he desires.

Nostromo (704 pages)
A confrontation between the aristocracy and the common people, tyranny and lawlessness, rapacious authorities and the desire for reform, postcolonial syndrome and state-building intentions, unitarism and separatism, big business and foreign investment, patriotism and cosmopolitanism, high ideals and compromises with corruption, military coups and constant “saving of the country”. This is a novel about a Latin American state that has recently won its independence, a state that was invented by Joseph Conrad (1857–1924), a world-famous English writer. However, in spite of the fictitiousness of the geographical location, the events described are surprisingly real, as well as passions burning in the hearts of the characters. In Nostromo, this acknowledged masterpiece of English-language literature and the best of his novels, Conrad reaches the heights of his artistic study of the life of society and secrets of human soul.
