Sophy grows up during the Napoleonic Wars, travelling around Europe with her father on his diplomatic missions. Despite her young age, she has gained a great deal of life experience, she is brave and knows how to take care of herself and others. She becomes alien to the grey everyday life of her aunt’s house in London, where she has come to stay during her father’s mission. In addition, not everyone likes her openness and directness, which contrasts with the stiff ness of the local nobility. Therefore, conflicts arise from time to time, adding dynamics and intrigue to the novel. As the novel progresses, however, the relationships between the characters evolve, and some even begin to appreciate and love Sophy for her sincerity, kindness, and originality. Will she be able to defend her happiness, and will her willingness to help others be justified?
