Georgette Heyer (1902–1974) is the author of more than fifty historical novels, one of the most famous and beloved among English people. If she became famous aft er her first novel, The Black Moth, then her second novel, These Old Shades, is considered the beginning of her real writing career. Justin Alastair, Duke of Avon, is known for his heartlessness, “devil-like” character and debaucherous lifestyle. Once, late at night, just in the street, he accidentally, for the sake of fun and old revenge, buys a young page who is thus escaping from his cruel guardian brother.
