Winnetou І is the first novel of the adventure cycle by the distinguished German writer Karl May (1842–1912) about the chief of the Mescalero Apaches Winnetou. The events of the cycle take place in the second half of the 19th century in USA in the course of colonization of the Old West. Winnetou, the noble and brave man, heroically resists to some attempts to deprive his people of the right to life on their own land. And in this unequal fight he finds a white-skin ally — a land-surveyor of the Western Railway named Old Shatterhand.
