A historical and crime novel, a world bestseller that has won many awards and prizes. Its plot develops in the severe winter of 1847 when the passenger ship Star of the Sea sailed to New York from Ireland, torn by lawless deeds and the terrible famine. Hundreds of fugitives are on board. Among them, there are a maid with a fatal secret, a bankrupt landowner, a journalist, a compiler of ballads as well as other passengers who are relentlessly haunted by the troubles of their abandoned homes. All of them dared to cross the ocean in search of a new homeland. All of them are connected more closely than you can imagine, and a killer, waiting for an opportunity, roams about the ship.
