Why was Sen no Rikyū, founder of the Japanese tea ceremony, ordered by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the ruler of 16th century Japan, to commit ritual suicide — and why did he obey neither protesting nor exonerating himself? In search of answers, his disciple converses with acquaintances from the world of tea and reflects on past and imaginary dialogues with the Master himself. This novel is a tribute to the spirit of art that endures even in the face of death, and it portrays the world of tea as a realm where one may discover the profound meaning of life within the confines of a small tearoom.
