Tolkien (1892–1973), the world-famous author of the literary masterpieces The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, repeatedly returned to the tale of The Fall of Gondolin and counted it among the three ‘Great Tales’ of the Elder Days, along with Beren and Lúthien and Children of Húrin, but never put any version of it into print. This book was the last to be edited and commented on by Christopher Tolkien (1924–2020), the writer’s youngest son who dedicated his life to publishing his father’s posthumous literary legacy.
